Stallions Sweep Opening Weekend

May-31-17

VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Varsity team kicked off the 2017 season with a 51-0 triumph over the Vaughn Rebels.  The Stallions dominated the game in all facets with both the offence and defence putting up points and the special teams units creating short fields.  Veteran offensive lineman Dylan Hart led a young offensive line which created good running lanes for the Stallions incarnation of the four horsemen; running backs Zach Kuhn and rookies Justin Janicki, Issachar Sookwah, and Destin Pearson.  Kuhn led the way with two rushing touchdowns and added a third on a touchdown catch.  Pearson was the leading rusher with 110 yards on the ground and also electrified the home crowd with a 63 yard touchdown in the dying seconds of the first half.  Sookwah also reached the endzone with a touchdown catch.  The Stallions dominated defensively with a whopping thirteen total quarterback sacks.  Defensive linemen Chad Beatty, Ebaad Anis, and Zach Kean led the rampage.  Veteran Free Safety Christian-Hutter Coppin had a strong game with a quarterback sack and several tackles for loss.  In the fourth quarter, Defensive Linemen Luc Puddicome had a strip sack that saw linebacker Justin Faria scoop up the fumble recovery and rumble into the endzone for yet another score.  The Stallions take to the road this Saturday for a 4 pm game in Sault St. Marie.  The Stallions will seek to emulate their last road trip to the Soo in 2009 when Stallions legend and current Toronto Argonaut Kyle Graves passed for six touchdown passes in a resounding victory.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity team opened their season with a 45-12 victory over Vaughn.  William McCulloch led the Stallions with several pass receptions including a touchdown while also kicking a field goal and converting all the team’s convert attempts.
The Junior Varsity squad also has four impressive young running backs led by veteran fullback Michael Cassano who had one touchdown run.  Rookies Matthew Koufis and Preston Howard also scored while Matthew Edwards contributed with several effective runs.  First year quarterback Daniel Hawthorn had a great first game with three touchdown passes while also demonstrating poise running the offence.  The Stallions defence came up big with several key stops when Vaughn was driving.  The defence was led by Linebackers Gavin Wallin and Clayton Mrazek and also received strong play from defensive backs Julian Di Sabatino and Josh Flindel.  Di Sabatino also impressed with a 55 yard punt return touchdown which came late in the fourth quarter.  The JV Stallions also travel to the Soo with a 1 pm Saturday kickoff.

BANTAM

The Huronia Stallions Bantam team overcame a 12-0 second half deficit to defeat Vaughn 20-12.  Running back Jaden Mutry had a big game with two touchdown runs.  The Stallions were also sparked on offence by a key reception on a leaping catch by wide receiver Jack Brickell.  Victor Garcia Lopes scored the other Stallions touchdown and set the team up with good field position after ripping off several impressive kick returns.  The Stallions managed to stymy a strong Vaughn running game with defenders Ty Racine and Joe Piltzmaker coming up with several big tackles.  The Stallions are on bye week two.
