Stallions send two teams to Provincial Championship Games

The Huronia Stallions Varsity football team defeated the Sudbury Gladiators 20-17 to capture the Northern Conference Championship and earn a berth in the Ontario Football Conference Provincial Title game.  The game started out very close and competitive with both teams turning the ball over early.  Toward the end of the second quarter, Sudbury struck with a long touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead into the half.  In the third quarter, Quarterback Dan Vandervoort struck back finding Wide Receiver Justin Alexander for a long touchdown pass and run.  Alexander had an outstanding game and gave the Stallions the lead with an electrifying 62 yard punt return for a touchdown.  The Stallions surged ahead 20-7 after Wes Burbidge recovered a fumbled punt in the endzone for a touchdown with ten minutes remaining.  The Gladiators stormed back and scored twice to close within three points and have possession with 2 minutes remaining.  Burbidge then had another big play intercepting the ball in the endzone to stop the final Sudbury drive.  The defensive player of the game was Linebacker Zach Hellreich who had 5 quarterback sacks to set a Stallions team record.  Justin Gleben moved to Tailback for the second game in the row and rumbled for 114 yards on 18 carries.  Gleben salted the game away with 2 first down runs in the final minute to allow the team to kneel for the victory.  Alexander had 278 total yards of offence on receptions and returns in an outstanding effort.  Quarterback Dan Vandervoort rushed for 67 yards and passed for 200 in only his second career game as a quarterback.  The Stallions take on the Twin City Predators this Saturday at 6:30 PM in Hamilton for the Provincial Title.

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity Football team overcame a 10-2 deficit to defeat the Oakville Titans 30-10 to win the Northern Conference Championship and advance to the Ontario Football Conference Provincial Title game.  Oakville was in full control of the game after the first quarter and then a switch went on and the Stallions dominated in all aspects to the final whistle.  Fullback John Shields led the offence with two rushing touchdowns.  Tailback Sam Niuewhof rushed for a touchdown and the other score came on a Adam Zussino to Jesse Alvez touchdown reception.  Safety Brandon Johnston had two late fourth quarterback interceptions to ensure that there would be no comeback for the Titans.  The Stallions take on the Burlington Stampeders this Saturday at 3:30 PM in Hamilton for the Provincial Title.
 
The Huronia Stallions were defeated 25-21 by the Peterborough Wolverines to narrowly miss a spot in the Provincial title game.  The game was a seesaw affair that saw the Stallions driving in the final minute with a chance to win before the Wolverine defence stiffened and came up with a big stop on fourth down.  The Stallions had a very successful season winning two playoff games after starting the season 0-3.
