JV Stallions Win in Dramatic Fashion; Peterborough Captures the Cottage Cup

VARSITY
The Huronia Stallions Varsity Team fell just short of a dramatic last second victory over the Peterborough Wolverines.   The loss also resulted in Peterborough winning the first annual Cottage Cup, which is a rivalry trophy awarded to the program that wins the majority of games between the programs.  The Stallions had the lead at halftime 13-8 but fumbled on the first play of the second half.  Peterborough converted the turnover into a touchdown to take a 14-13 lead.  A wild second half ensued as the Stallions tied the game up on a single and then took a 15-14 lead on another single.  The teams then traded touchdowns before Peterborough surged ahead for a 29-16 lead.  The Stallions scored a late touchdown, recovered the onside kick and drove the ball to the Peterborough 23 yard line.  The game ended on a last second Stallions pass attempt that fell short as Peterborough held on for the 29-23 win.  The loss drops the Stallions to 2-3 on the season and puts them in jeopardy of missing the playoffs and finishing below .500 for the first time since 2010.  Devin McGuirk was the top Stallions offensive player with 12 carries for 155 yards.  McGuirk also punted for two singles and currently is the leading rusher in the OFC.  Brandon Hyrncek started his first game at quarterback and completed 13 passes on 31 attempts for 171 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions with three touchdown passes called back due to penalty.   Hyrncek spread the ball around nicely with Cameron Hoestra, Christian Hutter-Coppin and Devin McGuirk catching the touchdown passes.  The defence was led once again by Linebacker Datun Atekepe who had five solo tackles, three assists and an interception.  Defensive Linemen Zach Willems also had a big game with five solo tackles, one assist and one sack.  The Stallions next game is this Saturday against Guelph.  


JUNIOR VARSITY
The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity team once again overcame adversity and battled to a thrilling 20-16 victory over Peterborough to improve to 5-0 on the season.  Peterborough sprinted out to a early 6-0 lead which the Stallions tied up on the strength of a Dustin Pearson touchdown run.  Peterborough clung to a precarious 16-6 lead with under four minutes remaining in the game.  Quarterback Nicholas DeJesus then orchestrated a touchdown drive that culminated in a passing touchdown to receiver Michael Tomczyk.  The Stallions defence then got a stop and gave the Stallions a chance for the win.  DeJesus again marched the Stallions down the field and hit Receiver Christian Maciag for the game winning touchdown with just under 20 seconds remaining.  The win was huge for potential playoff positioning as first place in the conference was on the line.  The win gives the Stallions a two game lead over Peterborough in the standings and the tie breaker with Peterborough falling to 3-2.  The Stallions next game is this Saturday in Guelph.

BANTAM
The Huronia Stallions Bantam Team dropped to 2-3 on the season with a 44-7 defeat to the Peterborough Wolverines.  The first half was close but the Wolverines proved to be too much for the Stallions in the second half.  The momentum swung with Peterborough scoring on a kickoff return touchdown and a long 60 yard run.  Joshua Robinson scored the lone Stallions touchdown and Eric Schons was the top defender with two quarterback sacks.  The Stallions next game is Saturday in Guelph against the Junior Gryphons.
